Councillor MILNE, Convener, in the Chair.

1. EXCLUSION OF PUBLIC AND PRESS

The Sub-Committee resolved in terms of Standing Order No 27(2) that the public and press be excluded during consideration of item 2 below to avoid the possible disclosure of information which was exempt in terms of Part 1 of Schedule 7A of the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1973, Paragraph 5

2. EDUCATION (SCOTLAND) ACT 1980 - ATTENDANCE DEFAULT

a) Case No 3/97

With reference to the minute of meeting of this Sub-Committee of 29 January 1997, the Sub-Committee again considered the case of a pupil who had failed to attend school regularly without a reasonable excuse. Appropriate notice had been served on the parent requiring her to appear or give written information to this meeting.

The parent failed to appear or to give written information and, after consideration the Sub-Committee agreed, in light of the improved attendance record of the pupil to take no further action meantime but that the school should continue to monitor the pupil’s attendance record and if necessary refer the matter to this Sub-Committee for further consideration.

b) Case No 2/97

With reference to the minute of meeting of this Sub-Committee of 16 January 1997, the Sub-Committee again considered the case of a pupil who had failed to attend school regularly without reasonable excuse. The parent was in attendance.

The Sub-Committee noted that there had been an improvement in the pupil’s attendance record and that efforts were being made to find him a Work Experience placement.

The Sub-Committee agreed to take no further action meantime but urged the parent, in conjunction with the school, to continue their efforts to encourage the pupil to attend regularly.
