Present: Councillors BRIAN MILNE, KATHLEEN RITCHIE and GEORGE NORRIE; Mr RON MURRAY and Mrs JACQUELINE SIM.

Councillor MILNE, Convener, in the Chair.

1. EXCLUSION OF PUBLIC AND PRESS

The Sub-Committee resolved in terms of Standing Order No. 27(2) that the public and press be excluded during consideration of the following item, so as to avoid the disclosure of information which was exempt in terms of Part 1 of Schedule 7A to the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1973, Paragraph 5.

2. REQUESTS TO EDUCATE CHILDREN AT HOME

The Sub-Committee considered two Reports by the Director of Education detailing requests from parents to withdraw children from school and to educate them at home and dealt with them as follows:-

(a) Report No 810/98

Having noted the terms of the Report, the Sub-Committee approved the request submitted by the parents to educate the child at home, subject to the requirement that efficient education be provided for her and that appropriate officers of the education authority be given the opportunity to monitor her progress.

(b) Report No 809/98

Having noted the terms of the Report, the Sub-Committee approved the request submitted by the parents to educate the child at home, subject to the requirement that they continue to provide efficient education for him and that appropriate officers of the education authority be given the opportunity to directly monitor his progress.

Having been advised that the parents also intended to educate an older sibling at home, the Sub-Committee agreed that the Director of Education should discuss the situation further with the parents and that, if necessary, a meeting of this Sub-Committee be held to consider the case.
